And the sightseeing continues...

Walk, visit museum, eat, walk, visit attractions, walk some more, eat some more...repeat everyday. This cycle of sightseeing has gone on for over two weeks and today wasn't any different. (Yesterday, we took a canal tour and saw the city from a different perspective...which meant a little less walking.)

After taking our time getting ready and leisurely walking around the city, my parents and I visited the National Museum in the early afternoon. We checked out the exhibits that were related to Danish history and life. Afterwards, we had lunch and then headed over to Tivoli, Copenhagen's own version of Disneyland. In fact, Walt Disney modeled his own Disneyland park after Tivoli. Although the park is compact, like the city itself, there were plenty of thrill rides, games, musical stages, and restaurants. There was at least something that everyone could enjoy. We walked around Tivoli and saw that Danes and tourists of all ages seemed to really enjoy themselves. We listened to a jazz band play on a small stage, watched a marching band of young boys in uniform parade around the park, and caught a glimpse of what looked like Lou Seal giving hugs and waving to young children (we assumed that he/she was the equivalent of Disney's own Mickey Mouse).

After spending a few hours in Tivoli (no, we didn't go on any rides), we headed out, ordered Indian food from a take away restaurant near our hotel, and devoured it in our room. Ordinarily, I think it  weird to eat dinner in a hotel room, but the three of us have been eating out for the past 2+ weeks and quite frankly we are dead tired of it. Also, this is the last night I'll get to spend with my parents before they head home, so being able to extend my last bit of quality time with them is necessary and desired.

Tomorrow morning I start the three week intensive Danish culture class. According to my mentor and past participants of the program, learning Danish isn't a piece of cake and since nearly everyone speaks English here, there's a slim chance that I'll actually comprehend most of it. But I guess I'll just have to see what happens in the weeks to come. I'll keep you updated with my progress. In the meantime, be prepared for tomorrow when I give you a quick lesson on how to say the days of the week and "hello, where are you from?" in Danish.

  1. LOVED Denmark when I visited some 22 years ago w/my BFF Steve! I remember the people being absolutely hospitable-warm and friendly! The Little Mermaid statue is near Tivoli, isn't it?

Not sure if they still give tours, but we also enjoyed touring the Carlsberg Brewery. They ended the tour in their tasting room-samples for all! They had a number of sparkling, non-alcohol fruit beverages, too.

Looking forward to hearing about Copenhagen from your student/local perspective!

  3. Auntie Les- Tivoli is closer to the city center than the Little Mermaid Statue.

My parents and I did the Carlsberg Brewery Tour last week. It was interesting, and did you see all those bottles on display? There were tons!

Auntie Liz- I miss you too. I'll be sure to keep blogging so you can see what I'm up to.

  4. Hi Natalie,
I didn't forget about you! I've been trying to post a comment since last week but it never went through! Dad just sent me an email as to how to do it so I hope you get this. After reading your blog, seeing your pictures, and talking to Mom and Dad, I really want to visit Copenhagen--what a beautiful city and great people. Do you think the University would take an 'ole lady like me in the program!!!
    Love, Doris

  5. Hi Doris,
I'm sorry that you were unable to comment until now. I didn't know that people were having difficulty, but I adjusted the settings. You should definitely visit Copenhagen, it's beautiful and not as insane as the big European cities. Of course they would take accept you into the program, there are a couple adults from UC here too. You'll fit right in!

  6. You did not meet Lou the Seal but "Skæg" who is one of "Rasmus Klump's" very good friend. He really has nothing to do with Tivoli but is an old but still very popular children's character. "Pingo" the penguin is also part of the "family" and they always end their adventures eating pancakes.
But now that you mention it Skæg looks a lot like Lou.
